If the indomitable Evan Smith had set out to be a movie director, he would have won the Oscar for best picture. Instead, tonight he won the magazine editor equivalent: the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, besting W, New York, and The Atlantic in the process. More here:

Evan will doubtlessly talk about how this was a team win; about the founding vision of Mike Levy; and about the new sheriff in town Jake Silverstein (who is a co-winner of this in his first frigging year!). Anything but himself. And while I’m sure all of this is true in spades, this award is a ringing endorsement of how Evan has led a venerable institution in a terrible time for magazines.
Cheers, Evan and congrats. If you miss your flight in the morning, everyone will understand.
